Is It Irresponsible Of Me To Throw Away Mail From My Last Roommate?

He didn’t change his address for a lot of things, and now I keep getting his mail. I don’t have a way of finding him ever. Should I just throw out his mail? They look important though. What are my choices?

  2. Sorry, but it is a federal law to throw away FIRST CLASS mail. Simply return the mail to the carrier (the next day… or go to the post office and explain) with a note on the mail, “ADDRESSEE NO LONGER AT THIS ADDRESS.” They will take it back to the post office. Then, it is THEIR problem, not yours.
    Have a polite day.

  4. Do not open the envelopes. Just scribble out the address and write “moved”. Then leave the mail in your mailbox. The mailman will collect that mail and return it to the sender.
It is a federal offense to tamper with another person’s mail. So, don’t throw it out. And remember to change your address with the post office when you move.

  6. Tampering with mail like that is probably a felony. All you have to do is write “wrong address return to sender” on the front of it and put back in the mailbox or give to the Postmaster.

  8. It’d be breaking federal law. Just mark them “no longer at this address” and give them back to the mailman or take them to the P.O.

  10. Write “return to sender, here no longer” and drop them in the mail.

  12. give them back to the mailman marked not known at this address. What you are doing is against federal law.
