Go to the iTunes folder (it may be called something else on your computer) in your My Music folder. Copy all of the music and the various iTunes library files. Paste these on an external hard drive or wherever you are making a backup. If you ever need to restore iTunes, just replace the folders in the iTunes folder with the files that you copied.
This is legal, as long as you don’t give the music that you copied to someone else.
There is an options in iTunes to back-up your songs on a disk. It is under File > Library > Back up to disc.
